Celebrity Spotting in Cornwall

For those of you with a love for the big screen there are many movie and TV locations all over Cornwall, but did you know we have quite a few famous folk from down here? From sports and music to theatre and film there are a bevy of celebrities who were born and raised in Cornwall.

The most renowned celebrities have to be that of music legends, Mick Fleetwood of Fleetwood Mack, born in Redruth and Roger Taylor of Queen – a Truro Boy who has returned to Cornwall after the worldwide success of Queen and now resided on The Helford which is home to two of our Forgotten Houses – Lorelei and Mellinzeath.

Olympic gold medallist sailor Ben Ainslie is another famous Truro boy whose sailing area is Restronguet, a beautiful stretch of the south coast near to Flushing (stay at Forgotten Houses’ Quay House) and home to the infamous 2012 Olympic gold letterbox dedicated to him next to the lovely pub of The Pandora Inn.

Another top Olympian who hails from Cornwall is the world champion and gold medallist rower Helen Glover who was bought up and still resides in Penzance. She married at the beautiful Prussia Cove near Penzance, a wonderful place for a rural stroll along rugged coastlines, dramatic manor houses and a deserted beach.

Other sports persons include Exeter Chiefs player Jack Nowell, Richard Sharp who captained England in the 1960s and retired England Footballer Nigel Martyn who became the first goal keeper to be paid £1 million.

Thandie Newton, a Hollywood actress who is famous for films such as Mission Impossible 2, crash and the gripping BBC drama Line of Duty was raised in Penzance and Robert Shaw, most famous for his role in the classic film Jaws lived in Cornwall during his childhood and attended Truro School.

Obscure famous people from Cornwall include John Couch Adams from Launceston who discovered the planet Neptune, James Hawes director of Dr Who, and  musician Richard D James who grew up in Lanner of Aphex Twins.

Other celebrities who have escaped the limelight and now live in Cornwall include Dawn French, who is the Chancellor of Falmouth University and resides in Fowey, TV presenters Richard and Judy who live near Polperro, Andrew Ridgeley of Wham who  lives in Wadebridge near Forgotten Houses’ Browns Barn, Ricky Wilson of the Kaiser Chiefs who has a flat in Falmouth, and Gordon Ramsey who has his second home in Rock, a popular seaside town and near to Forgotten Houses holiday homes of Waggon House and Josiah’s Cottage in Port Issac.

Many celebrities also holiday in Cornwall, enjoying the tranquillity and rural feel Cornwall offers away from the big screens have included the likes of Brad Pitt, George Ezra, Jamies Oliver and family, , popular destinations include St Ives (Stay at Pencobben nearby), Falmouth/Helford area; stay in Constantine a short distance from both areas and home to many Forgotten Houses holiday homes, Fowey and the Rock/Padstow area – home to the nearby holiday homes of Waggon House, Josiah’s and Browns Barn.
