Wreckers, Trevoyan, St Merryn, nr Padstow

Wreckers, Trevoyan, St Merryn, PadstowThe north coast between Newquay and Padstow has some of the best known beaches for both swimming and surfing and is also a good base for exploring the rest of Cornwall. This old house at Trevoyan is listed as exceptional because of age, character and features and was built in a sheltered plateau just inland from the sea, on the coast road between Porthcothnan and St Merryn, with easy access to Constantine Bay and the seven beaches of the Parish. In later centuries a bigger house was built on the front, which has taken the name Trevoyan. It was only in 2003 that the older part of the house, which rises from great boulders in the ground, was renovated to make a separate holiday wing with its own garden, entrance and courtyard. This wing is built of layered thick slate stone, with some earth filled walls, some part slate hung. It is roughly ‘L’ shaped under a rag slate roof. There is one of the deepest fireplaces we have seen, with separate fireplace, bread oven, smoke chamber and a small platform (with its own window) where children used to sleep. Now there is a high hall, dining room and three bedrooms and two bathrooms.

Like Trevoyan to which it is attached at one corner, this is a charming house in a great position. There are fields on all sides and views to the horizon to the sea. Beyond the garden behind the house are a large listed barn, further barns, an ornamental garden with pond & ducks. In addition to the courtyard there is an area of private garden. The layout and furnishing is comfortable rather than modern, with many old features retained. This is a fine old listed house in the countryside, great for the seaside, but also for touring. See also the entries for Trevoyan and Swallows.

Living Room at Wreckers, Trevoyan, St Merryn, PadstowWreckers has its own entrance down a narrow high walled track from the road, past the back of Trevoyan. Parking is outside the courtyard and garden which faces west & towards the sea. Here also is the old well house with a large granite trough. In the cobbled courtyard are doors to the sitting room and into the kitchen lobby. Off this lobby is also a bathroom and separate second WC. The kitchen has fridge freezer, washing machine and slate tiled floor. From the kitchen is a door to the dining room with rugs over large slate slabs, which is also the floor for the sitting room with TV, DVD, open fireplace, and ceiling showing the trusses high in the roof. From the sitting room is also a door to the small lawn to the south. The garden is on two sides and there is a pond in the farmyard. The walls have some stones showing, together with many old timbers. Upstairs are three bedrooms all fully and newly carpeted and a second bathroom. Gas fired central heating. Dogs allowed. Not the most suitable garden for toddlers.

Wreckers is separate and private from Trevoyan, but can be combined with Trevoyan by opening of two sound-insulated doors. The garden was extended in 2005 and a paddock is available for games. A charming and unusual house with many quaint features, well fitted out, and popular with visitors.
