On the site of an older mansion, Tresillian was rebuilt as a substantial country house around 1801, then rebuilt and extended in 1848. The house stands in 200 acres about five miles from the coast at Newquay and is therefore suitable for the holiday activities of both coast and inland. Tresillian is a large, luxurious Regency house. It is now an ‘L’ shaped house with private gardens of 22 acres, including terrace, lawns, ornamental lake, fountain and a walled vegetable garden. It has thick walls of gritstone with granite quoins, radial stone heads to the windows, with fine chimneys and a central cupola. The roof has granite and timber corbels beneath a slate roof. You arrive by the north drive at an imposing carriage sweep surrounded by lawns. Part of the rear staff wing is lived in. The home farm now renovated or converted is two hundred yards away.
Completely redecorated and re-carpeted, the house retains many features including shutters, panelling, coffered ceilings, fine doors and fittings, wall mirrors, splendid fireplaces. Other enjoyable features are club fenders and a dinner gong. We think there are 38 windows - of which two are of glazed trompe-d'oeil. Nearly every visitor has had a much enjoyed tour of the grounds from the Head Gardener, famous for his talks on the subject and for moon gardening. Organic vegetables may also be available. The house is meticulously maintained and looked after. There is a large terrace to the west. This is a fine and stylish house in a good location. It is surrounded by woodland and farmland and only a mile from Trerice. It is close to many attractions, but above all is close to the beaches, swimming and surfing, for which the area is famous.
The house was redecorated and renovated in 2001, 2004 and completely refitted again in 2007. The main south porch leads to the first entrance hall and then to a full height stair hall with an oak open well grand stair (curious newels) & balustraded balcony beneath an octagonal cupola. The ground floor includes a fine library, with original shelving and loads of books, a glorious large south facing drawing room, a large dining room and a kitchen. The main reception rooms have moulded plaster cornices. The house has central heating. The library, hall, dining and drawing rooms have original fireplaces, grates, surrounds and tiles and the drawing room has a Carrara marble fireplace. The furniture, furnishings and curtains are of good quality and comfortable with matching sofas and a big ottoman and chairs in the drawing room. TV and video. The dining room table seats 12. Ground floors are sanded with carpet or scatter rugs, or tiled; upstairs has plain light carpet throughout.
There are nine bedrooms. Two have magnificent four posters, and another a pair of bunks. There are six bathrooms one of which has a marble bath. Two have unusual layouts & fine ball & claw roll top baths. Two have showers over the bath, one bathroom has shower only. Downstairs W.C. Kitchen has a four oven oil fired Aga, electric hob, microwave, dishwasher, cafetiere, fridge/freezer and small breakfast table by the window seats. High chair. A new kitchen and breakfast room is to be fitted out in the old kitchens at the end of 2007. The utility room has commercial sized washing machine and drier. Large gardens (including small lake about 80 yards from house. Large climbing frame. The renovation of service outbuildings some distance away has provided a further astonishing wing with many facilities which may also be available. No dogs.
Because this is a large house to get ready, arrival is only after 4.00pm.
