The Old House is part of a restored mediaeval farming hamlet. This is a seriously old, interesting house. Its position in the landscape emphasizes that this has always been a most desirable place for a house in south Cornwall. The archaeologists had two sessions here, finding 12th century pottery at one end. The walls are up to 5 feet thick and include pieces obtained from Tywardreath Priory, demolished after 1538. There are some 35 pieces of carved church stone- how many can you find? The walls are of creamy brown slatey stone under an irregularly coursed slate roof with a small catslide roof of tiny slates over the front door. Two old fireplaces include one whose hearth stone is perhaps from the Priory Kitchen. Outside is a massive stone chimney. The circular stair is built around a post which reaches high into the ceiling. There are many interesting features such as the pigeon holes cut in the walls, the door frame of 1450, narrow windows or low windows, the high beamed roof, the fine joinery work, old fireplaces or the two wall lights made from two Victorian ridge tiles.
The Old House is some 4ft wider than most other Cornish buildings of its style and age. Not only does this provide unusual space and width but it suggests that it must have been a house of some importance. This is a wonderful, interesting and well restored house. It is not far to beaches, or to the little port of Fowey with its bistros, shops and pubs. The house is in a charming south facing valley, and is a fine touring base for visiting other parts of Cornwall.
Renovation of The Old House was finished in 2004. The entrance is up stone steps and the large sitting room has new furniture, window seats & wood burner. Television & DVD. 3 steps up lead to a large well lit kitchen with maple units & teak worktop, stainless steel sink & dishwasher, big fridge/freezer with ice dispenser. Both ground & first floor have planked floors. Oil fired central heating - underfloor to ground floor. Fine circular wood stair down to 3 bedrooms, bathroom with Victorian bath. Large walk in shower room includes mediaeval door. Both bathrooms are tiled. The main bedroom has second 16th century fireplace and ornate heavily carved bed. Other double bedroom has a second TV, & door opening onto the garden and plenty of windows with wide window shelves. Twin bedroom has big pine beds. Spacious, well fitted and equipped.
