Just beyond the famous north coast beaches around Polzeath is one of the finest stretches of cliff, cove and beaches in Cornwall. Once there were several small fishing villages using the deep fjord like inlets for shelter. However, legend says that the whole fleet of Port Quin perished in a storm and so the village has been derelict for 150 years. If you look hard beneath the greenery there are still remnants of the houses along the hill. Now at the end of a sheltered green valley with high cliffs to either side are only two houses lived in all year round, and some National Trust cottages. Much of the rest, including the Fish Cellars, has been owned by the same family for over a century. The high walled courtyard buildings of the Fish Cellars were for drying nets and pressing and salting sardines. The narrow coast road winds through from Port Isaac, past the house and on to the point. The scenery is breathtaking, the house is only ten yards or so from the long rocky much photographed beach and inlet. You can walk for miles along the cliffs beside the sea. This must be one of the most romantic spots in Cornwall, right on the beach but yet it’s close to the sights and sports of a well provided and interesting holiday area.
The Fish Cellars is in the section of building nearest to the sea. The entrance is at first floor level up the hill behind the house There are old and unoccupied cellars on the ground floor. The whole house has been redecorated in plain colours and fitted with new plain carpets in 2006. All windows are double glazed. The large sitting room takes up one end of the building. There is a fireplace and working grate. TV and DVD player. Good views from the windows. The kitchen has modern units, inset electric cooker and hob (new 2006), washing machine, microwave, fridge. The corridor leads past the bathroom, which also has a power shower, to two bedrooms. The first has two new single beds and the second has a double bed and futon. Both bedrooms have views down the old harbour. Oil fired central heating. An extra floor of accommodation is to be fitted out during the winter of 2007/8. This will provide extra space, bedrooms and bathrooms for 2008.
Just behind the buildings at the start of the valley is a large area of private rough garden and field with a small patio area and clothes drying line. Barbecue. No mobile telephone or radio reception. Dogs are welcome.
