Bosvathick Lodge, Constantine, Falmouth

Bosvathick Lodge, Constantine, Falmouth, Cornwall Bosvathick was a farming hamlet in the hilly farmland just inland from Falmouth. In 1760 it became the centre of a traditional estate & in 1884 the owners added a pretty lodge to one side of their main entrance, with its magnificent lions and balled piers. The Lodge (for which the first & only sketch was on the back of a now treasured envelope) was designed to be quaint. It was built for £210 of granite ashlar, with a pyramidal hipped roof of fish scale slate with deep eaves, decorated ridges and barges, a gabled porch and fine chimneys. The house is listed, and has been kept with its original features.

Bosvathick gardensThe Lodge is charming. It has its own little drive, lawn and large garden with many trees on the south, with farmland beyond the garden. Across the road above the high Cornish stone banks is more farmland, a tree lined drive leading to tracks, wood & farmland where visitors are welcome to walk. A couple of fields away are horse riding stables. There is access to the coast, Helford Estuary and the Lizard. The house is in beautiful countryside, in a maze of tiny lanes, and only a couple of miles from the coast. There is a prizewinning pub not far away and it is well placed for beaches (including three at Falmouth) and the area's attractions, restaurants, & activities. Several visitors have said the house is much nicer than a handbook can describe.

Bosvathick Lodge from the gardensThe Lodge has a small kitchen, with table, chairs and a granite fireplace with woodburning stove. The kitchen has electric cooker, fridge & microwave. The sitting room has an open grate and television. One bedroom has a large double bed and the other twin beds. Through a hall from the kitchen is the modern bathroom, which includes a power shower fitted over the bath. There is also a washing machine. Heating is by electric night storage radiators and the wood burner. Electricity and wood are included in the rent.

The house was redecorated in spring 2005 by designers Josephine. The rooms have high ceilings, but the house is cosy. There is safe off road parking within the large garden, which is a mixture of trees and lawns. Well fenced in for dogs, it is therefore, a reasonably safe garden for small children who may also, with supervision, enjoy the tree house in one corner.
